Monday July 2

Another extremely pleasant day with Donna solidifying her physical health and, while not conscious as strictly defined, giving us movement hints of progress.  The doctors have been very clear with us about what constitutes her reawakening and it is generally connected to her ability to respond to external stimulus.  When this happens we will make sure it resonates from everywhere.  What we do see is small expansions in her movements (arm, leg, foot, and even facial expressions).   While exciting to watch as we hang on every change, they are still baby steps on a journey.

By far the highlight of our day was when the therapists slid her over onto a special chair and then mentioned that if I could organize a few adaptations with the nurses, I could wheel her down the hall and sit with her at a big window where the sun shines.  Well dangling that carrot in front of me was a major motivator and with flashes of Donna’s ability to get anything done, I sorted it out.  Maybe it is my connection with her after 28 years of marriage but I could feel how happy she was with this.  Hint of a smile, some eye opening (could be reflex) and a general basking in the sun were awesome.  We just sat there, held hands and I chatted with her.  She held plenty of hands from her side.   It was only 20 minutes but it was special.

On the communication side, I have often accused Donna of carrying more than her share of a conversation.  Clearly this is her opportunity to let me catch up and surpass in one short period of time.  I don’t think I will ever complain again but I am taking the opportunity to tell her all I may have been unable to get said to this point.  Clearly she will have the perfect excuse for telling me later that she does recall ever hearing any of it.

We also learned today that the wheels of insurance and medical referral turn slowly.  No move today from Memorial Hermann Hospital to our next stop and not really sure tomorrow will be it either.  Rarely does something happen so slow that is really fine.  Fantastic care here and it causes no pain to delay as Donna continues to look healthier.  We will keep all informed when that happens and details associated.

So many prayers and well wishes are working.  Thank you and please don’t stop.

Bob
