Well, life gets quieter and harder for our family. After the adjustment to new surroundings for
Donna, we settle in to a new situation and it involves more patience than
ever. Donna is very physically well, we
work hard with the staff to keep her there but there is more quiet time and we
wait for her (and God’s) strength to heal her.
Much is happening with her doctors and staff. Tomorrow she will have her trach downsized
which is a positive step to ultimate removal.
As this is our primary infection concern area we are happy to see the
time post-wake up with the trach being reduced.
Her new Neurologist told us today, in response to a discussion
about time, that at 3 weeks in, these are still early days and we’ll be
reassessing where we are weeks out from here.
While a consistent message, it was extremely sobering and reaffirmed our
commitment to be prepared for the long haul in hopes it could all end abruptly
sooner. Donna also starts a new
aggressive physical therapy program tomorrow with professionals that will
probably make her long for those easier Bob workout sessions. Hopefully it will stimulate and strengthen
her. I’ll probably still squeeze one in
also. I like them too much to stop.
Sarah headed back to Alaska today after a great visit. We were also blessed with a good bit of Donna’s
family this weekend and they were a joy to have. Those Cajuns know how to bring a smile to your
face, to lend a hand where needed and of course fill your belly. All were accomplished. John is back with us tomorrow and Donna’s
mother has been gracious to stay over for a while also.
I had said that the time was coming when we could accept
some of the great offers of help. A good
friend has coordinated the creation of a CareCalendar that will help facilitate
some food help for us as we settle back into the guys in support. The link to get there is http://carecalendar.org/
and the
Colosimo Calendar ID is: 117946 and the security code is: 4981.
After logging in, it allows you to select on the calendar where you can
help. Thanks in advance.
My highlight
for today came as I was leaving the hospital (Donna’s mom staying with her), I
kissed Donna firmly on the cheek and told her I loved her. She opened her eyes partially and
smiled. Now I know that an occasional eye
opening and smile happen as reflex actions but it didn’t matter to me that it
might not be willful. I walked out of
the room brimming with fulfillment. Thank
God for the little things.
Please keep the
faith and thanks for the prayers and support.
We all feel you.
Bob
