As so often happens, slow hard times are followed by
brighter days. Donna showed off for the neurologist this morning and captured
(and surpassed) her prior form. While subtle,
her awareness seemed greater possibly as a result of some enhanced simulants
she is getting. We were apprehensive to
believe it yesterday but today there are whispered words coming from her mouth
occasionally. Only the rare word is
interpretable but they all seem purposeful and we can’t tell yet if they are
cohesive.
These few words have unleashed in her what can only be
called trach and respiratory mask wars.
She wants the capped trach out (as do we) but she is much more proactive
in her actions. She is under constant
watch as she lies in wait and then unleashes a relentless attack. Also, as there is no trach for respiratory use (it is
capped), so she gets a few respiratory treatments each day with a mouth and nasal
mask. These have turned into 15 minutes
of nonstop wrestling where she shows off her arm strength and her
innovation. We see all of this as
success as she clearly has the ability to bring her resources to bear on a
focused task. The pulmonologist has
agreed that her trach will be removed soon.
For all of us it won’t be soon enough.
We also hope that this will unleash the torrent of speech we long to
hear.
Plans are working for us to make the move to the medical
center as soon as early next week.
Timing is in the hands of others so we won’t dwell on it here yet. Also, we will be making a journey (she and I)
back to Memorial Hermann in the Medical Center Monday to have a new MRI
completed. All of her doctors are
anxious to see this.
A few parting thoughts, many thanks to all who have lifted
us in all forms including uplifting thought, prayer and food. You are all amazing. Also today while I was holding her hand, she
raised my hand to her lips and kissed it.
I thought at that moment that there was no more I could ask for. I am told she did the same with John
tonight. Wow.
Pour on the prayers,
Bob
